The actual price depends on what time of the year you'd like to be travelling--typically summer is the big tourist season in Turkey and starting from June till the end of August the ticket prices soar (can be much over $1000 NYC to IST). Around March or so is usually when great deals can be found, for as little as $300 or a bit more. In general, Turkish Airlines (THY) is your likeliest bet for finding a cheap ticket, and they're very good on the JFK-IST route. They're partnered with AA and the flights are codeshare between THY and AA, so you can get miles for AA from THY. Sometimes a European airline (such as KLM) or Delta can have a better deal, but that's relatively uncommon.
